Madelyn's T&A 2018

T & A

Madelyn had a tonsillectomy/adendoidectomy on July 27, 2018.

Months ago her speech teacher, Ms. Blair (who Maddie adores), was watching Maddie speak and asked if she ever snored.  Not bad, but I noticed on occasion.  I had always thought it seemed to coincide with a cold.  I had noticed she seemed to have an open mouth posture, however.
Long story short, we saw an ENT in the area, Dr. Bauer, we had a sleep study (not a fun experience), and ended up being recommended for a tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy due to obstructive patterns seen in sleep that were also felt to contribute to some speech issues.  So fast forward to us frantically trying to get this scheduled before school started August 15th.

We chose July 27.  A day he was operating, a day it was at a children's hospital, and the last day I felt safe to allow enough recovery before school.  You know, I know that there is no such thing as small surgery.  So I in my mind, even though the risk of bleed is 1%, I know that means that 1 in 100 babies have a bleed afterword...and I did not want that to be my baby!

The day of the surgery we all took off.  Our surgery was scheduled in the AM.  We got there early, checked in and went back around 930.  Maddie was being wheeled off to surgery by 10am.  She clung to me until her versed kicked in, then within about 2 minutes of administration, she had not a care in the world and flippantly waved good bye to us both.

To be honest, I was a little ball of nerves waiting.  Poor Robert.  My watch was set at 1004 when she likely would have gotten back to the OR suite.  I wanted him to be back  to talk to us on schedule, not to0 early (did he even check for hemostasis adequately?!), but not too late (were they the biggest tonsils he had seen in his 20 years of practice?!) Well, he came back pretty much at 20 minutes on the dot.  Everything went well he said. Whew.

We waited to see her in recovery.  NO nausea. No pain.  No Vomiting.  We got some juice and a popcicle down and were out of that joint!

Headed home.  She was out.  I was nervous about the 45 minute drive home, but this was the situation the whole drive.

We made it through with no tears, but to say it was not a long 2 weeks would be dishonest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last meal before the big day...she chose Mr. Gattis. Let's just say the arcade was a lot better than the pizza.

She was so cute running to each game and sliding her "credit card" to be able to play.
First meal at home.  She was looking good POD #0.  Oh we love you anesthesia/steroids.
 Snuggles with Mommy.

Nana and Papa eventually came into help keep Maddie as 2 weeks is a long time to take off work!
This kid is already the Queen of snuggles, but the surgery made her even more snuggly.
 Some get well gifts.
Poor baby, you can see her little face was swollen here.
She was all smiles, but the light in her eyes was gone for about 2 weeks.
It was amazing how it knocked her down.  Maddie is a little spit fire, but for literally two weeks, she did a LOT of laying around.
Lots of crafting at home to fill our hours.  Here, she saw an old photo album and realized there were no pictures of her in it (aka, before she was born), so she decided to draw some of her and put them in there, ha.  Yes, because there is no life without Madelyn.
About a week into it, Maddie was starting to get a little spark back, so her cousins came to visit, I think that is what helped her turn the corner, she was so excited.  They brought some fun things and Chick-fil-A...just what the doctor ordered.

Decorating cookies.

We had to keep a leash on her to keep her from running!  Mama knows about delayed bleeds child.
I found this a few days after her cousins left.  Ha, guess who is pictured.
More crafting.  I'll take this over Barbies any day!
Yes, and now she knows how to find what she wants to watch on her own on Sling.

Titi Christie also came to visit with some more goodies.  This girl got spoiled with visits/cards/messages. We love our Maddie girl.

I prayed and prayed over this child, that God would help her heal and not have any complications, and He delivered, like He always does, in way or another.

We are now over three weeks out and we are back to 110%!  She ended up losing 3 pounds, from 40 down to about 37, but her appetite is coming back, so I hope to put that weight back on!
